| Digital eye strain |
Digital Eye Strain defined as the physical eye discomfort
felt after two or more hours in front of a digital screen. As screen time
increases at home and in the office so do symptoms like blurred vision, burning
eyes, headaches and disrupted sleep. Myself experienced blurred vision and
disrupted sleep due to prolonged use of computer and cell phone. Most digital
devices emit light in which the blue (referred as Blue light) end of the visual light spectrum contains high energy than warm colors like oranges and reds.Blue light suppress Melatonin, which
fools the brain into thinking that it is daytime making us feel more alert which results poor sleep during
night. Fewer people are aware of the potential risks caused by Blue light. Our eyes
just weren’t designed for modern digital screen. The harm we’re doing to our vision, it turns out, could be very
real and may even be getting worse. But it is preventable.

The easiest
fix is to take a 20-second break every 20 minutes to look at something 20 feet
away (20-20-20 rule). Staring at screens often reduces how often people blink,
making their eyes drier. You can also adjust the brightness of your display and
sit farther from your screen. Stop using digital screens two hours
before bedtime. Use Kindle for eBook reading which has no color display. There
are also technological solutions which acts as Blue light filters. Apple’s iOS new release have a feature called Night Shift,
which shifts the display colors towards the warmer end of the visual spectrum. F.lux software is recommendable
for desktops (Mac, Windows, Linux) which makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the
time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day. Twilight or
Bluelight filter apps are recommendable for android phones. BlueReflect lenses, which have a special
coating that selectively absorbs part of the blue light, preventing it from
entering the cornea and reaching the back of the eye.Happy browsing!.
